In Murder Mystery 2 online, up to twelve players load into a single round split between one hidden murderer, one gun-carrying sheriff, and up to ten unarmed innocents — and the entire match hinges on deduction, positioning, and one dropped weapon. You either hunt everyone as the killer, protect the crowd as the lawman, or read body language and survive as an innocent.

This is the Roblox experience built by Nikilis (a sequel to the original Murder Mystery), first created January 18, 2014, and still running today. Rounds only start when more than one player is present, players vote on a map first, and roles are reassigned every round — so no two matches play the same.

How Roles Work

The murderer carries a knife and must eliminate the sheriff and every innocent without being identified. The sheriff is the only player armed with a gun and must find and shoot the murderer before the murderer strikes everyone else. Innocents have no weapons at all; their only tools are movement, observation, and communication with other survivors to figure out who is acting suspiciously.

Because roles are reassigned at the start of every round, a player who was sheriff in one match could be the murderer in the next, which keeps strategy fresh and prevents predictable play patterns from forming over a long session.

Maps and Rounds

Before each round begins, the lobby votes on which map the match will take place on. This voting step means the environment — its hiding spots, sightlines, and choke points — changes from round to round, forcing all three roles to adapt their tactics to new layouts rather than memorizing a single stage.

The Knife Economy

A major part of the long-term appeal is the trading and collecting layer built around knives. Players can unbox and collect a wide range of knife variants, and these items can be traded between players, creating an informal economy around rarity and appearance. Leveling up is tied into this system as well, giving players a progression path beyond simply winning rounds.
